1 Peter 2:9 isn’t just a verse, it’s an identity statement. Not an identity you create… but an identity God declares over you. That truth alone changes everything.
And maybe that hits extra close for me because I’ve actually written an identity statement before, the world’s version. Back in high school, I took one of those empowerment classes where you’re told to craft a personal identity statement that you’re supposed to repeat until it shapes your confidence, your habits, and your self-image.
And listen… I tried.
I wanted to be creative and unique. I spent way too long overthinking it. And what did I end up choosing?
Yes. SCRAP.
SCRAP was an acronym that stands for Strong, Confident, Redeemed, Artistic, Pilot, flying off into my sunrise of opportunity.
And here’s the part I didn’t see until years later: I didn’t just choose SCRAP because it sounded creative. I chose it because part of me actually resonated with being a scrap, like I was someone’s leftover. Something repurposed. Something you could make “useful” again, but not valuable on its own.
At the time, I thought it was deep.
Maybe even poetic.
But looking back? It breaks my heart.
Because I am not a scrap.
And neither are you.
You are not something discarded that God decided to recycle.
You’re not a leftover He patched together and hoped would turn into something meaningful.
You are not an afterthought, not a second chance, not a “maybe I can fix this” project.
I am God's creation.
You're God's creation, too.
He didn’t rework me, He formed me.
He didn’t repurpose me, He purposed me.
He didn’t look at the pieces of my life and wonder if He could salvage something beautiful. He designed me intentionally from the beginning. No mistakes. No scraps. No leftovers.
That’s the difference between who I was then and who I am now. Back then, I tried to define myself. Now, I receive the identity God already defined for me. Chosen. Royal. Holy. His own special possession. I don’t repeat the identity I came up with, I cling to the identity God already wrote.
As we begin this December theme, Marvelous Light, I want you to carry this with you: You were not called to simply survive the darkness. You were called to shine through it.
God declares identity before He assigns purpose.
He names you before He sends you.
He places His light inside you before you ever step into environments that need it.
So, step into this month with confidence, not confidence in yourself, but confidence in the One who called you, rescued you, and placed His light within you. The world around you may feel dim, but His glory is rising upon you. And no matter how dark the night gets, the light inside you is stronger.
