Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends. John 15:13
Today, across the nation, we pause to say two small but powerful words: thank you.
John 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” These words, spoken by Jesus, hold weight beyond their poetry. They remind us that love isn’t proven by sentiment but by sacrifice.
Veterans Day calls us to remember the people who’ve embodied that truth in living color. Those who’ve served, fought, protected, and given up comfort so that others could live freely have modeled, in a small but powerful way, the heart of Christ Himself. Service is love in action.
When Jesus spoke these words, He was preparing His disciples for the greatest act of love history would ever see, the cross. His example reminds us that true gratitude looks beyond the surface. It sees the cost. It acknowledges the courage. It honors the heart behind the service.
Here’s a truth nugget for today: Gratitude remembers the giver, not just the gift.
Whether it’s a veteran, a mentor, or a friend who’s stood by you in life’s battles, gratitude slows us down long enough to honor the sacrifice behind the story. Romans 12:10 encourages us, “Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another.” That’s what days like today are for, to honor those who’ve put others before themselves.
Maybe today, your gratitude looks like sending a message to a veteran or praying for those still serving. Or maybe it’s simply whispering, “Lord, thank You for those who have lived out this kind of love.” And as you do, remember this: the truest reflection of service is found in Jesus Himself, the One who gave His life for ours. His love is the standard; His sacrifice, the reason we can live in freedom of the soul.
Prayer
Lord, thank You for those who’ve served with courage, for the freedom their sacrifice has provided, and for the example of selfless love they reflect. Help me live a life that honors their service, and Yours. Amen.
