Children of Light | Ephesians 5:8

A field of wildflowers glowing in warm sunset light.

Some verses don’t just comfort you, they call you up higher and Ephesians 5:8 is one of them: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.”

Every time I read it, I feel that gentle nudge from the Holy Spirit reminding me: You don’t live where you used to live. You don’t walk the way you used to walk. You’re not who you used to be.

What Paul writes here is so simple, but so weighty: You were once darkness, now you ARE light. Not “you have light,” not “you carry light,” not “you’re learning light.” You are light in the Lord. Because when Jesus enters your life, He doesn’t just illuminate the room… He illuminates you from the inside out.

There have been moments in my life (quite a few, actually) where I’ve had to take a long, honest look backward at who I once was.

Immature.

Lost.

Confused.

Chasing things that never filled me.

Making decisions from a place of emptiness instead of identity.

But if I can look back now and see a different version of myself, it only proves one thing: Growth is real. Transformation is possible. And Jesus didn’t leave me as He found me. That’s part of walking as “children of light.” It’s not pretending your past doesn’t exist, it’s recognizing that God has rewritten your entire trajectory.

Every year, every season, every trial, every breakthrough… all of it becomes evidence that He is shaping you into someone who reflects Him more clearly. And honestly? That truth alone gives me hope on the days I still feel like I’m stumbling.

Paul doesn’t say, “You are light… so good luck out there.” He says: “Walk as children of light.” Meaning: Every day, I get to choose.

Do I step into who God says I am?

Do I live like someone He has rescued?

Do I let His character shape my reactions, my decisions, my relationships?

Walking in light isn’t perfection. It’s direction. And direction is something we can choose, again and again.

Here's today's truth nugget: when you look back and see how far God has brought you, let it fuel your confidence in how faithfully He will lead you forward.

Nothing about your growth has been accidental.

Nothing about your transformation has been wasted.

You are light because He is.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for calling me out of darkness and into Your marvelous light. Teach me to walk like someone who has been transformed, not in perfection, but in confidence. Help me see my growth as evidence of Your faithfulness, and help me reflect You to the world around me. Amen.
