When Plans Change | Proverbs 16:9

“A man’s heart plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps.” Proverbs 16:9 (NKJV)

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that God doesn’t waste detours. I can plan, organize, and dream all I want, and believe me, I do, but there are still moments when my carefully mapped-out path takes a turn I didn’t expect. It’s not failure. It’s direction.

This verse feels like a deep breath. It doesn’t say not to plan, it says that even as we plan, the Lord directs. The Hebrew word for “directs” is יָכִין (kûn, Strong's h3559) means to establish or make firm. So when my path shifts, it’s not because God lost track, it’s because He’s setting my steps on something solid.

Sometimes I wonder how many times He’s quietly redirected me away from something I thought I wanted… just to get me closer to what I actually needed.

If you’re feeling like things didn’t go the way you planned, maybe they’re going exactly the way He designed.

Prayer

Father, thank You for seeing what I can’t. When my plans fall apart, remind me that You never do. Teach me to trust Your timing and to follow where You lead, even when I don’t understand the road ahead. Help me rest in the truth that Your direction is always better than my design. In Jesus’ name, amen
