We live in a world that moves fast and feels heavy. Most days, peace doesn’t just drift into our lives, we have to make room for it. Colossians 3:15 gives us a roadmap for how to do that: “Let the peace of God rule in your hearts… and be thankful.”
Notice that Paul says let peace rule. That word implies permission. Peace is already available, it’s just waiting for us to surrender control long enough for it to take charge. Gratitude is what opens the door.
When we start thanking God for who He is instead of what we wish was different, we begin to notice the steady rhythm of His presence. Gratitude slows our minds and softens our hearts, giving peace space to breathe. Philippians 4:7 calls this “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.” It’s a peace that doesn’t always make sense, but it always makes a difference.
And here’s something that’s helped me: peace doesn’t mean the absence of problems; it’s the presence of perspective. When Jesus calmed the storm in Mark 4, He didn’t make the disciples row to shore first. He simply spoke peace into the middle of chaos. Gratitude does the same thing for us, it reminds us that even when life feels uncertain, God is still in the boat.
This kind of peace is something we choose daily. It’s a decision to let go of what we can’t fix and thank God for what He’s already promised. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.” Gratitude and trust work hand in hand.
So today, instead of asking for peace to show up, invite it in. Begin with “thank You.” Thank Him for waking you up. Thank Him for breath, for provision, for love. Gratitude creates room for peace to take the lead.
Take a deep breath right now. Whisper, “Lord, thank You that You are my peace.”
Feel that calm settle in?
That’s not your imagination, that’s the peace of God doing what only it can do.
