In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 1 Thessalonians 5:18
There’s a big difference between for and in.
Paul knew that when he wrote, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” He wasn’t suggesting we should be thankful for the loss, the heartbreak, the confusion, or the diagnosis. But he did invite us to find gratitude in those places, to see evidence of God’s presence right in the middle of what doesn’t make sense.
That little preposition, in, is powerful. It changes the posture of our hearts. Gratitude isn’t denial; it’s a declaration. It says, “Even here, God is good. Even now, He’s not finished.” We see this kind of faith in Habakkuk 3:17–18: “Though the fig tree may not blossom, nor fruit be on the vines… yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation.” Nothing about his situation looked hopeful. But Habakkuk still chose gratitude as an act of trust. His circumstances didn’t define his worship, his God did.
Here’s a truth nugget: Gratitude is the language of surrender.
When you choose to thank God in the middle of something hard, you’re not minimizing the pain, you’re maximizing His presence. You’re reminding your soul that He’s still writing your story and that no season is wasted. Romans 8:28 assures us, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
It’s not about thanking Him for the storm, it’s about thanking Him that He’s in it with you. That’s what makes gratitude so defiant and so holy. It’s a weapon against despair and a declaration of hope.
So maybe today’s gratitude looks simple: “Lord, thank You that You haven’t left me.” “Thank You for what You’re teaching me through this.” “Thank You that You’re still good.” Those words might not change the circumstance, but they’ll start to change you.
Because when thanksgiving becomes your rhythm, peace becomes your soundtrack.
Oooh, I might need to go make a t-shirt with that! Sometimes, the Lord drops the most profound truth nuggets! See y'all tomorrow!
Prayer
Father, help me to give thanks in all things, even when I don’t understand them. Teach me to see You in the middle of it all. Thank You that You’re still good, still faithful, and still here. Amen.
