As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. Proverbs 27:17

Friendship is one of the most sacred mirrors of God’s love. Proverbs 27:17 tells us, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” True friends don’t just share life, they shape it.

The image of iron sharpening iron isn’t soft or quiet. Sparks fly. Edges meet. Friction happens. That’s the beauty of real friendship, it refines us. Godly friends challenge us when we drift, speak truth when we forget it, and celebrate when we rise again. Gratitude for those people should come easily, but we often take them for granted.

Paul understood this deeply. In 2 Timothy 1:16-17, he thanked God for Onesiphorus, who “refreshed him and was not ashamed of his chains.” Friendship rooted in faith doesn’t walk away when life gets messy, it leans in. It says, “I’ll pray you through this.”

Here’s today’s truth nugget: Gratitude turns friendship into fellowship. It transforms shared laughter into spiritual strength.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us, “Two are better than one… for if they fall, one will lift up his companion.” Gratitude teaches us to lift with our words, to remind our friends who they are when they can’t see it for themselves.

Maybe there’s someone in your life who fits that verse perfectly, the person who calls you out kindly, who prays over you when you’re tired, or who reminds you that you’re not walking alone. Take a minute to thank God for them today. Better yet, send them a text and tell them why you’re thankful. Gratitude spoken is often the encouragement someone didn’t know they needed.

True friendship is mutual sharpening, a dance of grace and growth. When we live thankful for those people, we start to see God’s goodness reflected in their faces.

Prayer

Lord, thank You for the friends who sharpen me, encourage me, and love me well. Teach me to be that kind of friend in return, one who reflects Your truth, patience, and grace. Amen.
